International Affairs Commission

Foreign Consular Corps

The American Jewish Committee seeks to foster the growth of democracy; to interpret Israel to the American community; to protect the security and dignity of Jewish communities abroad; and to promote better understanding between all peoples.

Toward that end, the Chicago Chapter's International Relations Commission provides members interested in diplomacy and international relations with an opportunity to establish a rapport with leaders and representatives from foreign nations through on-going contact with Chicago's Consuls General Corps. These small and intimate meetings provide an opportunity for constructive discussion on a host of issues of interest to AJC members, allowing for Chapter members to educate diplomats and other consular staff about Judaism, issues of Jewish concern, and the importance of democratic ideals.

Chicago 101: Foreign Consular Corps Learn about City’s Religious, Ethnic Diversity

In an effort to provide Chicago’s foreign consular community with a deeper understanding of the city’s cultural diversity, the AJC-Chicago Chapter will host a two-part seminar devoted to exploring the various ethnic and religious groups that call Chicago home.

A look at “Religious Chicago” takes place on Monday, April 14, and “Ethnic Chicago” on Wednesday, May 7 and is open to all Chicago-based consular staff . Each of the sessions will begin at 9:30 and end by 11:45 a.m, followed by lunch.

“Having an understanding of the people who make up the mosaic that is Chicago is an important lesson. Our diversity is part of what makes this city so special,” said AJC Chicago Chapter President Allan Reich. “Among our many missions, AJC serves as a resource for the foreign consular corps on issues of democracy, religious pluralism and the welfare of the Jewish community locally and worldwide.”
